Yes, tinting your car windows is legal in Portugal — and has been since 2007. But there are rules: light limits on the front glass, an approved film and registration with the IMT. Skip them and the car fails inspection, with fines of up to €1,250. Here is what the law actually says.
The limits, window by window
The rules are in the Safety Glass Regulation (Decree-Law 392/2007). What counts is the light passing through glass and film together:
- Windscreen: at least 75% light transmission.
- Front side windows (driver and passenger, ahead of the B-pillar): at least 70%.
- Rear side windows and rear window: no minimum is set — they can be quite dark.
Because the glass itself already holds back some light, in practice only very light films fit the front limits. That is why the tinted cars you see on the road are almost always tinted at the back only.
Some sources quote 70% for the windscreen: the decree says 75%.
When a film is legal
- It is type-approved. It must carry a legible, permanent approval mark (IMTT-PL-… format, or an equivalent from another EU country).
- It is fitted on the inside, on approved glass, without covering the glass's own mark.
- The car has two exterior mirrors, left and right, if the rear window is tinted.
- It is in good condition. Bubbles or peeling film fail the periodic inspection.
Registering it with the IMT, step by step
Fitting film counts as a vehicle modification. Even an approved film within the limits has to be registered:
- Fit an approved film. Keep the invoice showing the film brand and reference — it helps prove the approval.
- Pass an extraordinary inspection at a category B inspection centre.
- Request the averbamento (the note on the registration certificate). The IMT fee is €150; the inspection is paid separately. The inspection report is valid for 90 working days.
Without the averbamento the film is not legal, even if it meets the limits.
Fines
Driving with a non-approved or unregistered film is an offence under the Highway Code (articles 114 and 115): a fine of €250 to €1,250, and the car can be impounded until it passes inspection.
What about factory privacy glass?
Many cars leave the factory with darkened rear glass. There the tint is in the glass itself, approved with the car, and there is nothing to register. The rules above apply to film fitted afterwards.
