It is one of the most common questions we get from Tesla owners in Lisbon: is a protective film worth it on a brand-new car? For PPF on a Tesla the answer is yes — and for reasons that do not apply the same way to other cars.
Why Tesla paint asks for protection
Tesla factory paint is known to be thin and soft. In practice, marks that would stay in the clear coat on another car show up faster here: wash micro-scratches, stone chips at the front and wear on contact areas.
There is also a design detail. The Model 3 and Model Y have large, flat surfaces — hood, doors, fenders — where any micro-scratch catches the light and stays visible.
What the protective film solves
PPF is a transparent polyurethane film applied over the original paint. It is self-healing: light scratches disappear with the heat of the sun or warm water. It protects against:
- Road stones — hood, bumpers and headlights take the impacts.
- Wash micro-scratches — the most common issue on EVs with flat panels.
- Contamination and UV — the paint underneath stays as it left the factory.
And the part that matters for resale: the film comes off without a trace, and the original paint is intact underneath.
Full front or full body?
Full front covers the hood, bumpers, headlights, mirrors and the front section of the fenders. That is where nearly every stone impact happens, and it is the best value option.
Full body protects the entire paint. On a Tesla this makes more sense than on many more expensive cars, precisely because of the thin paint and flat panels — doors and roof pick up as much micro-scratching as the front.

The final price depends on the model and the condition of the paint. Every car is quoted individually, with a fixed price agreed before we start.
PPF and ceramic: what we used on the Model Y
On the Model Y we did at the studio we applied full-body PPF with a ceramic coating on top. They solve different problems and work well together:
- PPF absorbs physical impact — stones, scratches, scuffs;
- ceramic makes the surface hydrophobic, so dirt runs off and you scrub the car less.
On EVs that second part counts more than it sounds: fewer aggressive washes mean fewer micro-scratches on exactly those large panels where they show.
Model 3 and Model Y: what changes
The principle is the same, but the Model Y is an SUV: more body area and a larger glass roof, which shows in material used and working time. The Model 3 is lower and shorter, and its front takes impacts at a slightly different angle.
On both, the areas we recommend protecting first are the same: hood, front bumper, headlights and mirrors.
Which film we use
We work with Llumar Platinum (200 microns) and SunTek Reaction (190 microns), both with a warranty of up to 10 years. On a car with sensitive paint it makes no sense to save on the very layer that protects it.
Application is done by hand at our own studio in Amadora, next to Lisbon, without rushing and with the necessary parts removed so the film wraps the edges.
Is it worth it?
If the car is new, yes — protective film goes on intact paint and that is where it pays off most. If the car is a few years old, we correct the paint first and only then apply PPF, so no defects get sealed underneath.
